It is always in your best interest to let sleeping Hornets lie and last
Friday evening at B.H. Weaver Stadium the Caverna learned that adage very
quickly after the Colonels Cornerback Devon Perry picked off a Jake Dial
pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown early in the first quarter
to go up 6-0. Metcalfe Quarterback Jake Dial must have taken that shot to
heart as he spread a lot of tormenting over the Colonels Defense the rest
of the game by throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for two more in
the Hornet’s 44-22 win.
The Hornets picked up their first TD and added a two point conversion to
lead after the end of the first stanza 8-6. Then the full fury of the
aroused Metcalfians blew the game wide open with 22 unanswered points to
gain a half-way advantage of 30-6. The Caverna Purple clad warriors
responded in the second half, outscoring the visitors 16-12, but the
damage had been done and it could have been worse as the Metcalfe
Countians had two scores called back in the last half due to penalties, in
fact the Hornets were assessed a total of 239 penalty yards during the
Devon Paul and Devon Perry sparked the Colonel comeback in the second half
by teaming up on two Paul to Perry TD flings plus the same on two
two-point conversion passes. Meanwhile Metcalfe’s defense completely
snuffed out any Colonel rushing attack. The Colonel defense was anchored
by Dytanius Franklin with 13 tackles followed by Tony Spears’ 8 takedowns.
Also noteworthy was some fine secondary work turned in by Devon Paul with
the aforementioned TD pick, Cody Sturgeon also recorded an interception
and Anthony Eackles racked up two pass deflections plus a tackle for loss.
Caverna ends their regular season at 2-8 but continues in the gridiron
wars next week when they travel west to Crittenden County for a first
round Distric matchup. Kick Off is set for 7:30 CST.
